Training Your Dog Does Not Have To Be Hard

Training your dog is part of responsible ownership. Giving your dog proper socialization skills and obedience training, you are developing a good canine, and this will keep your dog happy and safe. Check out these great dog training tips.

Regular challenges will keep your dog from losing his chops. Throw “pop quizzes” occasionally to be sure he is not getting out of practice.

Communication is key when training your dog. Make sure you stick to your guns when you are training your dog. Make sure your commands and body language are consistent, and that you reward and punish fairly. Don’t ignore the things that your dog is telling you. They will inform you of whether or not they are overworked, anxious, or having a great day.

Consider holding a toy to your dogs mouth when you are training him. When he puts the toy around his mouth, use a training clicker and offer him a treat. Train him in stages. The next step is to wait and let the dog pick up the toy. When he does, just click and then give a reward. After this, you should only reward your dog after he holds the toy in his mouth.

Social sessions with new animals should be very controlled and done slowly. Always take stock of your current family pets and how they will react to a new pet. You want all of your pets to have complimentary personalities so that bonding will be a breeze between them.

Making your dog feel secure enhances his loyalty, which will make for a better trained dog who will want to please you. If your dog feels anxious, he may experience separation anxiety, engage in fear biting or develop another type of unacceptable behavior. To help both you and your dog, always make sure your dog feels safe.

A harness will be more comfortable for you dog, although you will lose some of the control a collar will give you. When training your dog to obey in a harness, start by working him with a collar in addition to the harness. Eventually, the harness itself will prove sufficient in your dog obeying commands.

Make sure the whole family is familiar with your dog’s routine and rules. The dog responds a lot better if it has consistency when being trained. If people who are involved with the dog each have different methods of treating the dog, it will become confused.

Learn how to give the dog positive reinforcement in training without using treats. Dogs are eager to please and respond well to positive reinforcement tactics. You probably don’t constantly have a treat in your pant’s pockets. Good behavior can be rewarded with petting and hugging, which are two great treat replacements.

These tips should help you and your dog have an enjoyable relationship. A well-trained dog is happier and a joy to be around. Regardless of if you decide to train your dog on your own or use a professional, it is key that you do train your dog to ensure a happy union with your dog.
